Luke 11:15-26
“But if I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you”
Today, to snub the arguments of people who rejected him, Jesus used the philosophical method. Some argued Jesus that had chased away the devil through Beelzebul – the prince of the devil-. Using a philosophical method, Jesus answered them with comparison about the freak of a kingdom. The kingdom which is divided by fighting against itself cannot survive. Here we see an importance of a union. It is the pillar of welfare and of lasting prosperity of a nation. When a society or a nation has strong and firm unity then the guarantee is welfare. We can see in any history of the civilization of nations.
What is the union? Union derives from one. The one is perfection. The one cannot be divided because if it can be divided, it cannot be called again as the one. The division recognizes plurality because it can be divided into parts. It means that it has parts that can stand as autonomies. Then the autonomies subsist from themselves. Hence division is not the one and it has no union. Otherwise, one does not know plurality but only singularity. The one as singularity wants to say that it has no part and subsists from itself. In it, there is a union that is union from itself. It can be compared with a cycle. A definitive character of the cycle is round. It shows that it has no fraction. It is integrity and the fullest thing. It cannot be against itself. If it is against itself then it is heading for ruin. An example of this is cited by Jesus himself with a comparison of a kingdom and a household that is impossible against itself: “Every kingdom divided against itself is heading for ruin, and a household divided against itself collapses”. Inasmuch the character of the one is similar with a cycle which is integrity and fullest thing, so the one is a beauty, a beauty from itself. This beauty is called metaphysical beauty. It means this beauty does not only cover esthetical things but is a comprehensive reality. It means a first thing fuses in the last thing and the last thing merges in the first thing. The last thing is also the first thing. The first thing is also the last thing. It has no beginning and no end. This thing reminds us of Jesus’s words: I am the Alfa and I am the Omega. So we can say that Jesus is the one and the perfection. Revolting and separating from Jesus means dividing from Jesus which the result is a scattered thing. That is why Jesus said, “He who is not with me against me, and he who does gather with me scatters”.
Satan is impossible against itself. Against itself means break itself. Satan has also a union in itself. It has its essence which is no possibility that an essence against itself. Satan is the essence and the Beelzebul -the prince of devils- is also the essence. Therefore if Jesus dispelled the devil through Beelzebul- the prince of the devils- so it means that the essence would have been against its essence. This is an impossibility. Here we see the ignorance of the people who said that Jesus chased away Satan through Beelzebul. They also did not know that something which can defeat something has a different essence. Jesus dispelled Satan through the finger of God which shows the authority of God’s kingdom. The finger is a symbol of authority. It can be seen when a ruler commands something to his officer using his finger. The authority of God’s kingdom is powerful and stronger than the power of Satan. That is why Satan was defeated. And also that is why Jesus said with an image to decipher the power of God’s kingdom: “So long as a strong man fully armed guards his own palace, his goods are undisturbed; but when someone stronger than he attacks and defeats him, the stronger man takes away all the weapons he relied on and shares out his spoil”.
Jesus dispelled the devil meaning the kingdom of God has come. This kingdom is not like a worldly kingdom that can be seen. It is only seen in faith and by surrendering to Jesus. He is the prince of the kingdom of God. When one clings and unites himself to Jesus, he is in the union with Jesus. He gathers himself with Jesus. Otherwise revolting and separating the self from Jesus, means letting the devil control anything. What will happen? The answer is: “It then goes off and brings seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and set up house there so that the man ends up by being worse than he was before”
