John 14: 1-12
I am the way, the truth, and the life
Today, Jesus claims himself as the way, the truth, and the life. What is the meaning? His words actually refer to the mystical Trinity that guides strengthens, and confirms our faith and our life to God’s Trinity. Let us dive into the mystical Trinity more deeply.
The way is a direction; a track; conjunction to achieve a destination. If we look around us, the way is built in order that life could be continued. So, the way has an important role in our daily activities. Unfortunately, the function and the role of the way have been hidden and have submerged in daily activities so that we are never conscious of them. We could imagine if there were no way, we would never arrive at the destination. We are trapped in empty space without the ability to move, act, continue life, and achieve our destination. For that reason, the acclamation of Thomas: Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way is understandable.
Jesus says: I am the way. What kind of way that Jesus reveals himself? Jesus is the way to arrive at the Father’s house. The Father’s house is above; the Father’s house is in heaven. He is the way because he is the first one who has arrived at the Father’s house. There is no other way to the father’s house except through Jesus; he is the only way to the Father’s house. We have to trace and step this way as Jesus has traced it; Jesus’s way reveals the Father and His kingdom. In Jesus, the way is the path to meet with the Father and His love. Then, Jesus as the way reminds us of his other words: I am a good shepherd. The good shepherd has walked in front of us and has guaranteed us that we will have a place in the Father’s house. For this reason, the anxiety and the grumble like the acclamation of Thomas have faded away and have been ruined. Do not be afraid, do not be pusillanimous. We just only need to follow, trust, surrender and account for Jesus in his way. Why?
In his way, there is the truth: the truth that comes from the father because the father and Jesus are one; the truth that all the words that he speaks to us and the works he has done not from himself but from the father who dwells in him. The unity between the father and him means that the truth derives from the truth; the truth has the source from the truth; the truth begets the truth. In other words, that in him there is not a fake and the validity of His way is determined and unshakable also true. That’s why he says I am the truth. Jesus as truth proves that he loves righteousness and the law of love so that his way is God’s truth and goodness.
His goodness coming from the truth delivers us to life, exactly to the abundant life because he is the life. The abundant life will be bestowed and infused to us who believes, unites in him, and obeys his words with faith, hope, and love. The abundant life comes because we are under his protection and his love: his cross saves us and reveals God’s forgiveness and mercy; he surrenders his life on the cross to redeem and deliver life from sin so that we get a new and bright life; he watches us keep us from the famine by preparing a table before us that full of food and drink: the living bread and wine –his body and his blood- so that we become rich in the life. These facts prove that Jesus is the life: I am the life. For this, the glee of psalm: goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the lord forever may escort our journey in his way and our unity in his truth and our life to his life.
The way, the truth, and the life are mystical Trinity. The reason is they are actually three different meanings and functions which reflect the three persons but also state unity in nature. Trinity means three in one; one God in three Divine Persons. In God, there are three Divine Persons, really distinct, and equal in all things-the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. Trusting, surrendering, and walking in Jesus’ way with the truth and the life means that we trust, surrender, and walk in the Trinity: in the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. It is a mysterious way, a mysterious truth, and a mysterious life. In the name of the Trinity and as long as we have faith in them, we will do the works which Jesus has done: verily –verily I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do. There is no secret to doing great things, just only believing in the Trinity because The Father, The Son, and the Holy Spirit dwelt in us forever and go with us always. In happiness, all of our works and acts are for the glory of the God Trinity.
